Psychometric Properties of the Brief Scale of Religious Coping (Brief-RCOPE) in Colombian adults

Abstract:

Objective: to determine the psychometric properties of the Brief Scale of Religious Coping in Colombian adults. Method: the sample consisted of 456 Colombian adults (41.7% men and 58.3% women) with ages between 18 and 98 years. To analyze the factor structure, a confirmatory factor analysis was performed with the unweighted least squares method. Results: the confirmatory factor analysis showed a satisfactory fit level to the proposed two-factor theoretical model (χ2=2187.25; RMSEA=.061 (IC 95%: .033-.085); SRMR=.059, TLI=.924; CFI=.940). The estimates of the Brief-RCOPE reliability indices, measured with Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega, reached the traditional limit of .70. We found that the items discrimination index of the Brief-RCOPE scale was high (R2 = .302** - .729**). Conclusions: the evidence suggests that the Brief-RCOPE scale is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating religious coping in Colombian adults.
