Pterigium and its relationship with work and sex

Abstract:

Introduction Pterygium is one of the commonest ophthalmologic diseases worldwide, mainly in dry warm climates and in rural areas. Objectives To present the fundamental results on the prevalence of pterygium and its relationship with work and sex. Data source Literature review of both printed and digital materials, for a total number of 27 references of scientific journals published from 1983 to 2007. Results The studies made in Cuba and in other countries agreed that pterygium is closely linked to risky works having its own characteristics that make different population groups more or less vulnerable, depending on the health care, the length of time at that work, economic and family problems, among other factors. These elements around the employment reinforce it as a risk factor for the disease with a strong social component. The analyzed data showed that although there were differences between men and women regarding the occurrence of pterygium, males were the most affected. Conclusions Health promotion and disease prevention strategies should be put into practice in these vulnerable groups that are used as workforce without due protection.
