Public services deficiencies and breeding of Aedes aegypti in Venezuela

Abstract:

This study analyzed the relationship between deficiencies in water supply and garbage collection and the increase in Aedes aegypti (mosquito) breeding sites on the northern coast of Venezuela. For this purpose, a sample of 100 dwellings was extracted from 30 towns selected in 1992. The number of Aedes aegypti breeding sites was estimated, several Aedes indexes were calculated, and housewives were interviewed to obtain information about water supply, the frequency and duration of interruptions in that supply, the existence of urban sanitation services, and excreta disposal. The data were subject to principle component analysis in order to rank the towns by the variables that describes the deficiencies in services. The initiation of local programs to recycle containers and to construct tanks in which mosquitoes cannot breed, together with health education and community particpation campaigns, is recommended. -from English summary
