Purple Stools in a Patient With Neurofibromatosis Type I? A Case Report: 2997
Abstract:
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and comprise 1–3% of gastric neoplasms. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) individuals are affected by tumors at an increased incidence. Symptomatic GISTs in NF1 patients are usually diagnosed at an earlier age than typical sporadic GIST patients: in adulthood but prior to age 50. A slightly higher incidence among women is seen, and it develops at younger age. We report the case of a 61-year-old male with history of NF1. Due to a positive fecal immunochemical test on routine labs, he underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), which revealed a 4cm mass near the cardia, a biopsy was positive for low grade GIST (spindle cells), multiple subserosal/satellite nodules, negative c-KIT, and positive for CD117.
