Pyweekend: Not your typical hackathon
Abstract:
In this paper, we present our approach for developing a hackathon as an educational tool for motivating and encouraging non-CS students and engaging them in real coding tasks beyond the classroom. We define our hackathon as a gender and discipline diverse and inclusive event. We also report our experience organizing such an event for two consecutive semesters at a large public polytechnic University, with a total attendance of 252 students (38% female, 62% male) from 36 different disciplines. Finally, we report on the perception of these students towards coding after participating in their first hackathon.
