Q fever: Current epidemiological findings

Abstract:

The Q fever is an endemic zoonose which propagated in the Netherlands. The study of the epidemiology of the disease is connected to the understanding of the bacteriology, the pathogeny and the immunology of its causal agent, the bacteria Coxiella burnetil. The human infections which increase since 2007 has for origin the waves of abortions in the naive goat exploitations situated in highly populated areas. Billions of bacteria were spread on the environment via the scattering of manure in spring. The transmission by air explains the extension of the disease, some bacteria being enough for infecting an individual. This synthesis updates the information on the hosts species, the ways of transmission and the risk factors. Options of management and perspectives of improvement are proposed.
