Qualitative analysis of Cuban propolis by thin layer chromatography


Abstract:

Analytical Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) using Silica gel plates of GF254, hexane: ethyl acetate (7:3) as solvent system and, Ce(SO4)2/H2SO4 and vanillin/ H2SO4 as general developer, was carried out. The developed chromatographic procedure was validated, allowing the identification and differentiation of the three types of Cuban propolis. We analyzed 60 propolis samples from different regions of Cuba, classified in type I, II and III, according to previous chromatographic and spectroscopic studies. Chromatographic conditions used for each group as well as the use of isolated compounds from the propóleos type I and II as patterns, facilitated the observation of characteristic stains corresponding with the chemical markers of each one of the propolis types.
