Quality assessment of spruce roots from damaged stands

Abstract:

The usually recorded root parameters, dry weight, number, length, and amount of mycorrhiza present are investigated as to their suitability for judging the quality of root systems. If work efforts are considered, determination of dry weight seems to be sufficient for determining changes in the shoot-root-proportions. A shifting of this proportion in favor of the root indicates "root stress", and one in favor of the shoot lack of assimilative supplies. Thus in already evidently damaged stands a reduction of the root system may usually be expected. An exact assessment of the root system should be made by determining the ramification density and the "relative mycorrhiza frequency". In doing so, criteria for favorable and unfavorable development are indicated. © 1985 Verlag Parey.
