Quality parameters for plant and extracts used in the preparation of an expectorant formulation
Abstract:
Introduction: Drugs based on medicinal plants, where the problem is much more complex than in synthetic drugs, the quality is a basic requirement, not only for its intrinsic significance, but because it is the foundation upon which reproducibility of safety and efficacy parameters are supported. Quality control of herbal drugs and their derivatives (extracts and tinctures), guarantees their identity, purity (absence of pollutants, forgery or adulteration) and content of active ingbkp_redients or markers, so it is important to ensure the quality, effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines. Objective: To evaluate the quality parameters of the extracts obtained from Eucalyptus globulus Labill, Boragoofficinalis L and Sambucusnigra L., and the combination thereof. Methods: The aerial parts of Eucalyptus globulus, Boragoofficinalis and Sambucusnigra were tested in addition to preparing the 30 % and 70 % hydroalcoholic extracts and mix the three species to study the quality parameters. Results: studies of the aerial parts of E. globulus, B. officinalis and S. nigra showed dimensions within the reported ones in the literature, fulfilling this quality requirement. Conclusions: The physical and chemical parameters evaluated in extracts and leaves from the three drugs and in the mixture showed mutual correspondence, thus allowing setting some quality indicators for these products.
