Quantification of Contaminants Through Infrared Spectrometry in Naphtha Engine Oils
Abstract:
The research focuses on the quantification of contaminants in the lubricating oil of a spark-ignition engine; a controlled percentage of contaminants is induced, and they will be verified with the standard oil sample. The selection of the lubricating oil is developed based on an analytical hierarchy process. The Citroen C-ELYSEE vehicle is the experimental unit of the study, from which the oil samples will be extracted for further analysis; Kendall SAE 20W50 lubricant is used, due to the selection, the contaminants are ECOPAIS fuel with a RON 87 and a refrigerant with an ethylene glycol concentration between 85–90%. The samples are processed on optical equipment using the Fourier transform infrared spectrometry technique, both in terms of Absorbance and Transmittance. The results indicate that small percentages of glycol in the lubricant cause large variations in the chemical properties of the oil. Where the common frequency band extends in a range of about 920 to 1250, and the percent absorbance grows with the glycol level. Finally, the carbonaceous matter product of combustion is identified in the wavenumber of 1700 due to the type of fuel used.
