Ramón Margalef (1919-2004). An enormous work not entirely well known

Abstract:

In 2014 the tenth anniversary of the death of Professor Ramon Margalef is commemorated. This article presents an overview of the publications of Dr. Margalef reaching a total of 563 items. The dominant topics in his works was both marine and freshwater ecology and largely focused on studies of plankton. His papers were mostly published in Spanish, Catalanish and, at lesser extent, in English. Margalef published in nearly 100 different journals of different tipologies (from scientific to divulgative). Papers published in the journals “Investigaciones Pesqueras” and “Publicaciones del Instituto de Biología Aplicada” were the most numerous, yet book chapters and conference proceedings dominate their work. Of all his publications, 383 are listed in the "Web of Science", with an average of about 100 citations per year. His 1978 paper on the life-forms of phytoplankton remains highly cited (more than 50 citations per year), with number of citations increasing over time. It is noteworthy the little knowledge of the books he published (with the exception of the first he published entitled “Perspectives in Ecological Theory”, from 1968). Despite the international recognition that Margalef had in life, it seems that his work is largely unknown by the XXI century ecologists. His name has disappeared from most University textbooks in ecology and one of his great contributions to modern ecology (the introduction of the information theory and the Shannon-Weaver index as a measure of diversity) does not even appear in the ecology textbooks.
