Re-presenting Indigenous in Ecuadorian Media: A NewsFrames Approach
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the Reframed Stories project in which the coverage of Indigenous people in Ecuadorian media played an instrumental role in participatory workshops on media representation. First, the analysis of the coverage of news representing Ecuadorian Indigenous populations was conducted using NewsFrames tools and methods. Later, a series of workshops were held in which Ecuadorian Indigenous activists undertook participatory media analysis. Reframed Stories works with underrepresented or misrepresented communities to analyze data stemming from their representation in media allowing participants to respond to such representation from their own perspectives. The project aims to foster discussions about digital narratives and self-representation within Indigenous struggles for identity built upon memory and resistance.
