Recovery of tourist destinations after the earthquake: Review of Ecuador’s case

Abstract:

The article aims to explore the tourist situation in the province of Manabí-Ecuador, after the earthquake of April 16, 2016. The research is based on a descriptive methodology at first from the bibliographic review related to natural catastrophes in tourist destinations, which bases a qualitative work based on a design and application of interviews and mapping of public and private actors related to the management of tourism activity at the regional, provincial and municipal levels. In addition, a series of data was collected, obtained from secondary sources for analysis. The results offer information on the effects of various strategies aimed at reactivating tourist destinations, using key factors such as solidarity and tourism resources of the Manabí identity not conditioned by affected infrastructure, allowing Manabí to position itself as the second province most visited nationwide. Although short-term trend changes are reflected as a positive response to immediate containment strategies after the catastrophe, this can contribute to changes in the type of product offered in the province and its destination management as such.
