Relationship between motor manifestations and cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease

Abstract:

Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system with motor and cognitive symptoms. However, the relationship between these symptoms, although suggested, has been little studied. The objective of this study is to find if there is such a relationship between motor symptoms and cognitive impairment associated to this pathology. A sample of 50 patients under treatment by the Neurology outpatient clinic of Dr. Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Hospital was selected and underwent a series of tests that evaluated their motor and mental performance. The results showed a significant decrease of their cognitive functions that were parallel with their motor symptoms. Conclusion: Patients with this disease present a motor and cognitive impairment in wich each one of these variables seemed to be highly codependent.
