Representaciones Mentales sobre el concepto de Función

Abstract:

The purpose of this research was to determine the representations that high school students have about the concept of function. For this purpose, it was necessary to identify these representations and then classify them. The theory to support the research was Johnson-Laird's mental representations, according to which there are three types of representations: propositional, images and mental models. The research design is non-experimental and descriptive; to carry it out, a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were applied to a selected group through a non-probabilistic sampling technique. From this process, it was determined that students mostly use propositional representations to solve problems related to functions; however, it was also determined that, in spite of being able to recognize mathematical symbology, students make mistakes when interpreting it. Finally, it was found that very few students make use of graphs or diagrams to solve problems related to functions, and the vast minority manage to construct mental models.
