Representaciones sobre el paisaje y la naturaleza en la frontera occidental de la Audiencia de Quito, 1595-1630 (Estudios)

Abstract:

This article analyses the forms by which geographical knowledge was created in the Gobernación de Esmeraldas and the different representations of landscape in the region at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The analysis of these discourses permits the introduction of the theme of imperial narratives and their complex elaboration. The various discourses that link the cultural identity of the inhabitants of a given region and the surrounding habitat is a long term process that began at the end of the sixteenth century. The evidence shows on the one side, an ""official"" narrative that was imposed over a long time, and on the other hand a number of discourses produced by other social colonial actors. The four authors analysed are: Gaspar de Torres, Antonio de Morga, Martín de Fuica and Cristóbal de Troya. All the cases correspond to the ""burocratic"" literature, not destined for publication.
