Jim Davis duty was to ‘idealise’their subject. History painting based largely on classical, biblical and historical sources was considered the most worthy field to emulate. Nevertheless, conversation pieces and genre paintings depicting scenes from everyday life also became popular, especially the work of the Scottish genre painter, David Wilkie. Portrait painting continued to be a remunerative form of activity for artists
