Resilience and coping styles of young students with disabilities
Abstract:
This quantitative research studies resilience in young students with physical disabilities from a psychosocial dimension. The relationship between coping styles and perceived social support is evaluated in a group of 28 young people diagnosed with a physical disability, selected in a non-probabilistic way in canton Manta, Ecuador. The following questionnaires were used: The Coping Style Questionnaire, Perceived Social Support, and the Resilience Scale of Wagnild and Young. The data obtained were processed with the software SPSS.23. The findings indicate a moderate level of resilience in the variables competence, self-discipline, and acceptance. The coping styles: positive reevaluation, problem solving, and avoidance correlated positively with participants' level of resilience; as well as social interaction, affective and emotional-informational support. Consequently, the need to permanently include the resilience factor in the sanitary and emotional treatment of people with physical disabilities is ratified.
