Resources for understanding race, ethnicity, and health

Research.” In that issue, the Book and Media Review Department listed many resources compiled by the Office of Minority Health Resource Center (Gambescia, 2002). Below is a brief overview of four prodigious books published by Jossey-Bass that help public health professionals understand the issues surrounding race, ethnicity, and health. Although not all health education professionals at first view themselves as “working in minority health” or certainly do not consider themselves “experts in minority health,” upon further reflection, we need to appreciate the inescapable connectedness that we have to the issues related to race, ethnicity, and health. Whether we are site based, disease or health issue based, geographic service area based, population based, or preparing future health educators, to be effective, we have a responsibility to understand the many and complex issues surrounding race, ethnicity, and health.
