Review of condition indicators for transformers in marine applications

Abstract:

The propulsion of ships through electrical power provides improved efficiency, reduced emissions and better controllability for a variety of vessel types. Transformers play an important role in the marine power system and are used in a range of applications including galvanic isolation, voltage conversion, phase shifting, fault current reduction and harmonic current reduction. Vacuum impregnated cast resin transformers are the preferred option for marine applications. Such transformers are critical to the continued operation of the vessel and are therefore are specially designed to ensure reliability. The consequences of transformer failure on a vessel is often more serious than on land. This paper examines the possible causes of transformer failure, describes the failure modes and provides recommendation for various CM techniques. A survey of literature on available CM techniques is provided followed by discussion on current and potential future developments.
