Riesgos del cultivo de tilapias en Venezuela

Abstract:

A call of attention is made about the negligence that reigns in the tilapia culture in Venezuela. The so-called monosex (all male) tilapia culture, considered by some as the solution for unwanted reproduction and for the avoidance of biodiversity risks, are analyzed, and the falsehood of this argument is demonstrated. Special emphasis is given to the tilapia culture in marine areas, providing sample cases of reproduction in the marine environment and of the establishment of natural populations of Oreochromis mosssambicus (one of the paternal species of the red tilapia tetrahyibrid) in diverse marine areas of the world. Threats to biodiversity are stressed, legal aspects of these cultures are discussed, and recommendations for diminishing the hazards of tilapia culture for the country's biodiversity are provided.
