Riqueza y abundancia de mamíferos en el Área Nacional de Recreación Isla Santay, Guayas-Ecuador
Abstract:
Mammals are vertebrates that present hairs, maintain constant their corporal temperature, and its females develop mammary glands to produce milk and feed their offspring. The greatest diversity of mammals in Ecuador is found in the humid forests of the Eastern region or Amazonian Tropics. The Santay Island National Recreation Area (ANRIS for its spanish acronym), has a variety of natural resources and types of ecosystems, which are essential elements for protection and maintenance of the mammals fauna of the Western region. At the ANRIS, the richness and abundance of mammals were analyzed, identified and compared, between zones with different levels of disturbance, the division of the sampling area into two zones was achieved: intangible and intervened zones, using direct and indirect methods for the monitoring of the species and complementing with the installation of trap cameras. Among the results, it was possible to register seven species in two zones. The highest abundance was recorded in the intangible zone, and the most abundant species was Leopardus pardalis in both sampling areas. Additionally, Philander opossum, Sigmodon peruanus and Lontra longicaudis represent new records for the locality, while Tamandua Mexicana, Lontra longicaudis and Odocoileus peruvianus are suggested identified as conservation priority species for conservation.
