Risk and Vulnerability Analysis of Flood Hazards in the Colón Parrish, Western Ecuador Based on HEC-RAS Numerical Simulation

Abstract:

In the coastal area of Ecuador and especially in the Province of Manabí, there are permanent floods due to the high winter rainfall in that area, generating a permanent risk for the population. In the present work, by means of hydraulic modeling with the HEC-Ras software and a detailed hydrological study of the upper and middle zone of the Portoviejo River basin, the flooding, threat, risk and vulnerability zones were established for periods of return of 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 years, for the Colón Parish, Portoviejo Canton of the aforementioned province. Based on the results of this study, flood, threat and risk maps were prepared, with the appropriate recommendations for the authorities and the population affected and likely to be affected by floods.
