Role of DNA methylation in somatic embryogenesis
Abstract:
Researchers have isolated specific DNA methyl transferase inhibitors from carrot (Daucus carota) cells. When these inhibitors were added to actively growing rice (Oryza sativa) cell suspension cultures, they caused a reduction in the rate of DNA methylation but did not interfere with DNA synthesis. When added to carrot cell suspension cultures, the inhibitors had a general DNA demethylating effect and dramatically suppressed somatic embryogenesis, but did not prevent proliferation of undifferentiated carrot cells.
