SEM fractographic analysis of compacts obtained by wastes and solid wastes of domestic origin
Abstract:
Fractographic analysis was performed on cylindrical compact by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of a polymer matrix composite material with fine and coarse particulate, tested in compression, obtained from the dry fraction of waste and solid waste of domestic origin (metals, ceramics, polymers and cardboard), processed by dry mixing, sieving and hot pressing. The analysis of both particulate material showed the fragmentation of its constituents by the applied stress, allowing the flow of the matrix together with the fractured particles, with planes oriented at 45 ° from the surface of fine particulate material to the drawings and more smooth and compact, oriented perpendicular to the compression stress (barreling) for coarse particulate. Compressive mechanical properties, were higher in coarse particulate compact, which is consistent with the characteristics of the observed fracture surfaces, associated with the failure mode of cracking (fine particles) and barreling (coarse particulate). This behavior can be attributed, among other factors, to the best possible flow of molten polymer of coarse particulate compact, reaching a better cohesion between the polymer matrix and particles (glass, metal, ceramic, cardboard), achieved through viscoelastic and rheology behavior of the polymer blend forming the matrix. The mechanical properties of compression of the material characterized supports the possibility of developing new materials potential from waste and domestic waste, allowing further reduce the environmental impact associated with the overall process of manufacturing.
