SOSChat: Opportunistic messaging system for vulnerable environments

Abstract:

The use of messaging applications on smart mobile phones has increased, as has Internet access. However, these intentions to share information are limited in vulnerable environments from the perspective of technological infrastructure, or because of its geographical location, being very fragile environments in the face of any crisis, where data transmission channels have been destroyed or collapsed. Under these conditions, the use of messaging applications based on opportunistic networks is a viable alternative for people to communicate. This communication model tolerant of disconnection takes advantage of the contact time between mobile devices to disseminate the information until it reaches its destination. This article presents an offline messaging application, based on opportunistic networks, that uses WiFi-Direct and Bluetooth. Actual measurements were made between the devices, in addition to simulations, to determine the feasibility of using opportunistic networks.
