Scaled-world simulations in attention allocation research methodological issues and directions for future work

Abstract:

This chapter focuses on scaled-world simulations for studying cognitive processes in complex event monitoring tasks in work domains such as cybersecurity and financial event monitoring. It presents a task paradigm named the dual-task attention research testbed (DART) and explains its applicability to study performance during nonroutine critical events (events that operators are not experienced with). This chapter then presents a simulator of a financial event monitoring task (i.e., advanced interface design lab (AIDL) simulator) that was applied to better 262understand the disruptiveness of interruptions. The disruptiveness of interruptions can be dependent on task load and the pbkp_redictability of events monitored, and this chapter explains how these were manipulated using AIDL simulator. Advanced knowledge about what makes interruptions more disruptive can be useful in designing cognitive aids that screen for or defer interruptions for operators engaged in time-critical tasks.
