Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency
Abstract:
Secondary adrenal insufficiency is defined as the insufficient adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) production by the corticotroph cells of the pituitary, which can be acquired or congenital. The diagnosis of secondary adrenal insufficiency can be challenging and is often made in synopsis of patient symptoms and history with results of basal laboratory values and dynamic endocrine testing. Patients with this diagnosis require hydrocortisone replacement therapy, which should aim to be as low as possible to avoid adverse long term sequelae, such as osteoporosis and glucose intolerance. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd..
