Simulation for Benign Prostatic Conditions

Abstract:

The current status of surgical training has changed from old-fashioned forms to new educational methods, in which E-learning, mentorship, telementoring, and modular training take on a key role. Simulation appears as a modern solution that enhances training capabilities and helps prepare surgeons for their learning curves. There are countless benefits associated with simulation practice during the learning process of urologists. Modern simulators can reproduce virtually all forms of modern minimally invasive surgeries, including laparoscopic, robotic-assisted and endoscopic surgery. In this chapter, we will focus on simulation on the main surgeries for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia: transurethral resection of the prostate, photoselective vaporization of the prostate, holmium laser enucleation of the prostate. Bench-top and virtual reality simulators for these procedures are reviewed and discussed. We will also focus on briefly reviewing future directions in training, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning.
