Situations and ontology networks to define adaptive actions in e-learning systems

Abstract:

With the multiplication of mobile devices and the wide application of e-learning systems to complement the traditional classroom learning, many researches have been developed to enrich these systems, aiming at becoming more attractive and aware of the students' needs. Our research goes further on the modelling of adaptive web based e-learning systems, which has in their definition the awareness of student's context to properly react to that information. In this paper we propose a conceptual model of the student context, conceptualized as an ontology network. Then, this conceptual model is accessed by a situation ontology, responsible for detecting situations lived by the student; to each one of them adaptive actions will be suggested. Thus, we detect e-learning situations by evaluating context from personal, domain and technological natures which is possible through the broad vision of contextual data conceptualized by the ontology network. Finally, some examples of situation detection are shown for specific e-learning scenarios.
