Smartgrid: connection of wind and solar power generated in rural farms to the grid
Abstract:
The electrical power systems have operated in the same way for the last 60 years and their design was based on a one-way path from the generation to final customers. However, with the presence of Embedded Generators and Smart Grids, the actual distribution systems have become an active and complex structure where real and reactive power can flow in both directions and where the connection between users and grid plays a key role for handling this two-way flow. The present dissertation carried out a study about the connection between Embedded Generators and the Grid considering relevant Smart Grid aids, focused on rural farms with low wind and solar power generation. The study was based on the data obtained from a farm located near Newcastle Upon Tyne which is using electrical power from the grid and is generating wind and photovoltaic power.
