Snack consumption and its relationship with the lipid profile in children and adolescents enrolled in the Maracaibo municipality, Zulia state


Abstract:

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death in Venezuela and the world. A wide variety of risk factors pbkp_redispose the development of this pathology; among them the lipid profile and inadequate eating habits such as the absence of snack consumption, are the most prominent. Objective: Associate the consumption of snacks with the lipid profile in children and adolescents enrolled in the municipality of Maracaibo, Zulia state. Materials and methods: The sample consisted of 393 children and adolescents between 10 and 17 years of age in the Maracaibo Municipality, Zulia State, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Nutritional evaluation (anthropometric and dietetic), clinical and biochemical evaluation were carried out, and finally the results were tabulated, stored in a database and analyzed using the statistical package SPSS for Windows, version 17.0. Results: It was found an equitable proportion between girls and boys in the study, with similar characteristics, except for the glycemia that was found slightly higher in the female population. The 57,7% (273) children consumed snacks and of them 75.8% (298) consume extruded snacks. An association was reported between the consumption of snacks and the CC and the Ct/HDLc ratio variables. It was possible to demonstrate, according to the results obtained, that there is an association regarding the consumption of snacks, abdominal obesity and hyperalphalipoproteinemia.
