Snow properties derived from TM and SAR measurements
Abstract:
The snowpack parameters are important to climatological and hydrological investigations. Measurements of alpine snowpacks with SAR and TM are sensitive to different snow parameters. Using data acquired with the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and the NASA/JPL AIRSAR in the Otztal Alps, we derived snow particle size and wetness maps from TM band-4 and C-band polarimetric SAR measurements. This study shows the techniques of retrieval snow particle sizes and wetness from each sensor. The information with temporal and spatial variations in these snow properties will prove our understanding of the processes of natural snowpacks and provide the quantitative measurements for climatological and hydrological studies.
