Sound noise monitoring platform: Smart-phones as sensors


Abstract:

Recent research suggests that there are adverse effects of loud noise on people in urban areas. This makes noise assessment an important concern for policy-makers, urban planners, and citizens in general. Even though there are sound noise measurement standards, there is not a common strategy for data collection over a long period. The purpose of this study is to propose a WSN platform for continuous sound noise monitoring using static smartphones to measure noise. Although there is evidence against and pro use of smartphones as sound noise meters, these calibrated devices would be sufficient for asset of harmful levels of sound noise after accounting for its error margin; around 4 dBA. Aggregation time and transmission strategy are key facts to pbkp_redict lifetime of the network when uploading real-time data. We describe our proposed platform and the importance of following already existent standards and protocols to enhance query and integration in other processes. Additionally, we have set up a proof of concept experiment and then we have analyzed energy consumption of each smartphone in joint with two communication scenarios: only sampling without transmission and sampling and sending data to the OGC-SOS server through IEEE 802.11. The energy consumption is similar in both scenarios. A definition of the period of uploading is needed to detect events without overloading the server with data from a vast amount of users.
