Spatial autocorrelation in remotely-sensed and GIS data

Abstract:

The presence of spatial autocorrelation can confound statistical tests by violating the assumption of data independence. However, recognition and incorporation of spatial autocorrelation into analyses can enhance the information content of value-added products and statistical results. Two common measures for assessing the strength and nature of spatial autocorrelation in nominal and interval/ratio data were applied to image classification and data samping problems for model building within a raster GIS/image processing format. The effects of and appropriate techniques for dealing with spatial autocorrelation are presented through two examples. -from Authors
