Spatial distribution of antibiotics consumption and its relation with sociodemographic variables in Santiago de Cali

Abstract:

Introduction: The use of antibiotics is generally related with microbial resistance. For these drugs, there have been identified consumption patterns by geographic areas and even related socio-demographic variables. These aspects are unknown in Santiago de Cali, which limits the identification of drugs consumption in order to carry out effective interventions. Objective: Do an spatial analysis on the antibiotics consumption in the towns from the data of the sales in drugstores in Santiago de Cali, and to establish an association with sociodemographic variables. Methods: To determine the antibiotics consumption, it was used the daily dose defined per 1000 inhabitants x day, and the exploratory analysis of spatial data. For the relation analysis, it was made the multiple linear regression by models validation. It was carried out a geographically weighted regression and the generated models were mapped. The analysis units were each of the towns in Santiago de Cali and the population belonging to the drugstores of each town. There were analysed 19 socio-demographic variables. Results: With the I of Moran and the C of Geary it was identified a spatial pattern of overall high consumption to the South of the city in the towns 18 and 22, which was associated with deaths by infectious diseases, inhabitants per drugstores and the Rom ethnia. It was found relation between the health institutions in the town, the number of inhabitants per subscriptions to the sewer system and a higher consumption.
