Spray drying study of Plectranthus amboinicus, Ocimum tenuiflorum, Passiflora incarnata, Matricaria recutita and Melissa officinalis
Abstract:
The use of dried plant extracts is increasingly common in the pharmaceutical industry for the preparation of different forms of medication. The powder form is prepared by spray drying. This method furthermore provides various advantages over conventional extracts and tinctures, such as the absence of ethyl alcohol, easy storage, manipulation, transportation, and stability. The scaling up of unit operations before the industrial level, allows the study of the products and processes behaviour, avoiding a loss of resources when intermediate stages are omitted. This work present the results of spray drying studies of Plectranthus amboinicus, Ocimum tenuiflorum, Passiflora incarnata, Matricaria recutita, Melissa officinalis extracts and describes the feasibility of scaling up production while maintaining physicochemical and microbiologic quality. © 2010 Boletín Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Plantas Medicinales y Aromáticas.
