Stopping the flood of damages from Cochiti Dam

Abstract:

The Cochiti Pueblo, a federally recognised tribe, inhabit a reservation in New Mexico behind the Cochiti Dam. The US Army Corps of Engineers control the dam and sometimes flood up to 11 000 acres of the reservation. The author discusses the conflict between the protected right of the tribe to maintain its religion and way of life, and the national definition of natural resources. This is discussed in the following sections: history of the dam; public interest vs. pueblo interest; the challenge for tribal government; and fixing the seepage problem. -after Author
