Study of crystallization and formation of stereocomplexes of PLA-b-PDMAEMA block copolymers

Abstract:

The copolymers employed here exhibited a lower melting temperature than the homopolymers. The crystallization kinetics of the PLA blocks was retarded by the presence of the PDMAEMA block. The copolymers were miscible in the melt. The presence of the PDMAEMA block disturbs the PLA crystallization. On the other hand, the melting point of PLDA/PLLA and PLA/PLA-b-PDMAEMA stereocomplexes were higher than those formed by copolymer mixtures. This indicates that the PDMAEMA block had a disturbing effect on the stereocomplex structure stability. For the low molecular weight stereocomplexes the particles exhibited a conventional disk-shape, on the other hand for high molecular weight samples, the particles displayed unusual star-like shapes.
