Study of machining strategies for CNC milling of cavities on Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene

Abstract:

Cavity milling is one of the most used machining operations by the industry in different types of materials; among them, thermoplastics. Several cutting strategies are available that influence different parameters of the manufacturing process and the surface quality of the final part. In this research, the spiral, zigzag, and one-way performance cutting strategies for CNC cavity milling on Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW) were compared using a methodology and measuring machining time, power, energy, and surface roughness. The results allowed a performance strategy ranking according to the measured parameters. The developed methodology can be applied to other materials, geometries, and cutting strategies.
