Study of the pregnant adolescent and its repercussion in the newborn, in a health care area


Abstract:

A comparative and descriptive study was carried out in all adolescent mothers and their childs born in Gynecologic-Obstetric Hospital in Guanabacoa Municipality, from 1995 to 1997 coming from the health area of regla Municipality, selected as a risk group (78 cases. Comparative group had similar features, with the exception of mother's age, varying between 20 and 34 years (108 women). We found significant differences in both groups, such as association of adolescent mothers with a low schooling level (10.3%), a high level unmarried women (20.5%), and a prevalence of housewives (82.1 %). Also, we found in this group a 38.2% of instrumental birth, a 15.4% of immediate complications of newborn, as well as an incidence of 10.3% of low birth weight. Authors suggested significance of sexual education and reproductive health and prophylaxis of early pregnanty.
