Study of the seismic risk of the heritage buildings of the Historic Center of Quito
Abstract:
Although the chosen place for the site of the kigdom of the Quitus was a plain protected by a mountain set, that in Prehispanic and Colony times seemed to be a kindly topography, today it reveals as a live example of a site with high structural vulnerability and seismic threat. The study zone is limited to the Historical Center of Quito, it counts with 376 hectares with a total of 4.674 lots with inventoried buildings as heritage, of these, 130 buildings are monumental, basically a tangible and intangible heritage are risking day by day with this seismic stage. This research propose the conceptual, theoretical and practical problems, related with the seismic vulnerability of the Historical Center of Quito, for which a recompilation of the historical documentation is made referred to the natural threats among these are its filled ravines in Colony times, the landslides, the construction over the hillside, the volcanic closeness and the earthquakes that endanger to the Historical Center, and, the constructive variables of the built heritage in the study area. A methodology based in the design for performance by the heritage building is proposed, to determine which is the expected behavior that will face the building in the moment of an earthquake, and so evaluate the seismic vulnerability of the study cases; also, through a cadaster of the most relevant historical colonial buildings are systematized and a current architectonical and structural diagnosis is prepared. The results of the present research will aloud to have a clear vision of the seismic vulnerability of the heritage buildings in the historical area, based in the seismic catalogs, its constructive typology, the morphology …
