Surface characterization of nacre by XPS and SIMS
Abstract:
Two methods were used to demineralize nacre either by HCl or EDTA treatment. Core-level spectra of C(1s) in XPS can be deconvoluted to hydrocarbon, ether carbon, carbonyl and carbonate peaks. The Ca/C XPS peak ratio can be correlated to the ratio of carbonate peak to the whole carbon. Organic matter was clearly shown by a series of hydrocarbon peaks in SIMS spectra and 16 amino acid components were detected from the soluble matrix of nacre. Principal component analysis (PCA) has been applied to analyze the SIMS spectra of nacre and two demineralized nacre samples.
