Synthesis of a diosphenol derivative from 7Β,9Α-dihydroxy-longipin-2-en-1-one

Abstract:

The basic hydrolysis of a fraction obtained of general chromatography of the extract from Stevia lucida affords 7ß,9a- dihydroxy-longipin-2-en-1-one [[]1]. The oxidation of the compoud [[]1] with potassium permanganate affords a complex mixture of oxidation products. The diosphenol [[]2] was isolated from the reaction mixture by preparative thin layer chromatography. These compounds were characterized on the basis of spectroscopic studies, including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments. A plausible reaction mechanism for the transformation of [[]1] to diosphenol [[]2] is discussed.
