THE RED BEDS OVERTHRUST OF CUZCO (SOUTHERN PERU)-STRATIGRAPHIC EVIDENCE, PALEOGEOGRAPHIC AND TECTONIC INTERPRETATIONS

Abstract:

Sedimentological and stratigraphic studies show the Cuzco sedimentary series to include senonian and paleocene deposits. The thick overlying, partly Cretaceous ''Red Beds '' thus constitute a regional-scale subhorizontal nappe. This latter likely proceeded from the South and was emplaced probably by gravity sliding between Paleocene and Oligocene times.
