THE ROLE OF BIOMASS IN THE FUTURE POWER SYSTEM: BIOMASS-BASED HYDROGEN AND BIOMASS-FUELED POWER PLANTS

Abstract:

The European Union's decarbonisation targets have increased Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) share in the power system. Due to the instability and intermittency of wind and solar energy, the power system requires the support of other generation technologies. This study assesses the role of biomass in the future grid as a renewable source to generate electricity to support VRE and its role in producing hydrogen and then generating electricity using fuel cells. The results show that the biomass needed for both technologies is 23% of forest and agricultural residues. This percentage would be 13% considering all the biomass availability. Therefore, there is sufficient biomass availability in Spain to cover 6.1% of the annual demand in the power system (3.4% using biomass-fueled power plants and 2.7% through PEM fuel cells).
