TWR: UN RANKING DE UNIVERSIDADES CONSTRUIDO A PARTIR DEL ANÁLISIS DE REDES SOCIALES
Abstract:
University rankings have gained importance in recent years, with a growing number of classifiers used in international comparisons between universities. Their influence makes them a point of reference for the formulation of policies in higher education that leads to raising the academic and scientific level. Despite the individual contributions of rankings, little or nothing is known about the possibility of taking advantage of their characteristics unified. Therefore, this work addresses the construction of a new ranking through the application of social network analysis (SNA). The starting point is two existing rankings, THE (based on opinion polls) and Webometrics (based on bibliometrics/cybermetrics), which are individually analyzed. Each ranking becomes a network. Then, both are merged through the centrality indicator to identify those universities that have a greater number of direct connections with the rankings indicators, creating a new network. This network reorders the universities through the merged centrality indicator, thus obtaining the new ranking, which is called TWR. The result of the ranking is a more balanced classification because it is based on both opinion polls and bibliometrics/cybermetrics.
