Taphonomy and Late Holocene paleoenvironments from Epullán Chicas zooarchaeological record (Northwestern Patagonia, Argentina)
Abstract:
Results The assembly [number of identified specimens per taxon (NISP)= 9116; minimum number of individuals (MNI)= 1339)] includes skeletal elements and teeth of mammals, birds and reptiles (59%), eggshells (40%) and mollusk shells (1%). On the basis of the chronostratigraphic studies, these materials are assigned to Late Holocene temporal units (Unit I= previous to ca. 2.2 ky BP [MNI 392]; Unit II= ca. 2.2-1.7 ky BP [MNI 743]; Unit III= ca. 1.7-1.5 ky BP [MNI 110]; Unit IV= ca. 1.5 ky BP-20th century [MNI 110]). The recording of fresh-water mollusc shells (Diplodon chilensis), abundant eggshells and bone fragments of Rhea, bones of passeriform birds, bones and teeth of largesized (Lama guanicoe), medium (e. g. Chaetophractus villosus, Conepatus chinga) and small-sized (rodents) mammals, indicates a large taxonomic richness (Figs. 2-5, and
