Technical feasibility analysis of an underground HVDC line. A case study in Ecuador

Abstract:

This research proposes a 500 k V transmission line between two electric power substations belonging to the National Transmission Grid in Ecuador. The substations are in the provinces of Guayas (Posorja) and El Oro (Pasaje). Two alternatives are proposed, the 'High Voltage Alternate Current' (HVAC) and, an innovative underground 'High Voltage Direct Current' (HVDC). The lines are needed for an strategic aluminium and steel plant in Posorja. This paper presents the results of application power-flow and stability analysis in the grid to these transmission lines alternatives. The research involves an extensive simplification and reduction modelling exercise of generators, lines and loads to focus in the particular area around the case study area. Our results show that the two proposed lines are technically feasible.
