Technical note: Ornamental woody species of the university city of the university of Carabobo, Valencia, Venezuela

Abstract:

An inventory of the woody ornamental species located on the University city was done at the Universidad de Carabobo, Valencia, Venezuela. The inventory was performed consulting satellite maps of the University City. 10 visits were done to different spaces out of the seven faculties that are part of the Universidad de Carabobo. Botanical samples in situ were recollected and identified. The determination of the species was done using taxonomical keys, specialized literature and comparisons between herbal exemplars from the HERZU herbarium. A total of 43 woody species were identified and grouped in 40 genres and 20 botanical families, out of which 31 species belong to the Magnoliopside subdivision, 10 are Liliopside, a division of Cycadophyta and Pinophyta specie. The families with a higher number of species were the Leguminosae and Arecaceae, with 12 and 10 species respectively. 51.16% of the found species were introduced and 48.84% were Native Americans or naturalized. The predominant species were Mangifera indica (Mangoe), Roystonea oleracea (Chaguaramo), Veitchia merrilli (Palma manila), Terminalia catappa L. (Almond) y Swietenia macrophylla (Mahogany). From the total of the evaluated species, 33 were determined as arboreal and 10 had a stipitate growth shape. The specie with broader distribution was M. indica, sowed at the seven faculties evaluated. The plants found in this job represent a floristic element which is important in the research area, mainly by their ornamental value.
